Oh, and I quilt, hike, and bake on occasion. I'm still here and debating how to come back to the world of blogging. While I get my internet act together, feel free to check out the new blog which will detail my adventures with my fiancé and his son as we vacation in Spain in France in the next several days. http://spainandfranceodyssey.blogspot.com
Well, yeah, I remember that.

At any rate, I'm clearly on a hiatus. I think I might start this up again in October or November. I have to change a few things about the blog. I sold my house this summer and am moving into town with the cat army. We are all moving in with my special man friend. He and I are buying a house together that is on the national historic registry - to my UK reader this means it was built in 1928, that's what we consider old here. :) The house will be within walking distance to work. Which sounds great now but will be less exciting when the January downpours occur. I won't care, I'll be happy, in love, and with my own sewing room. Life is good my friends.

Until the fall…. I miss you all and hope to get on-line again.
Happy day before Mother's Day. I just realized that I am a bad child because I hadn't planned for Mother's Day until just now. One call to a random florist in Wisconsin later, and flowers are on their way. The florist I called is from a small town and is a part hair stylist, part florist. Love it. She also spoke with a thick Wisconsin accent and it makes me wonder how I managed to escape the state without it. (Yes, to my friends, my accent isn't nearly as bad as theirs.) If you want to know what the accent sounds like, think of the movie, Fargo. It makes for a surreal flower ordering experience.

Knowing that have finished one thing today has filled me with a sense of accomplishment that can only mean more good is to come. I plan to go for a walk and buy groceries today, nothing can stop me.

Speaking of nothing stopping me, look at that quilting in the pictures above. I did straight line quilting on my home machine. These lines are rather addictive and I was okay with them being wobbly because the stars in the quilt are wonky and I thought that would tie everything together nicely. This quilt is a smallish quilt and measures 44 x 45. It is for a contest my guild has entered and consists of metallic fabrics provided to us for the contest. I added the white and the yellow, but the rest was contest material. The challenge was to design a Modern Metallics quilt and after several false starts I came up with a large wonky paper pieced star and several wonky pieced stars. I like how it ended up, but this isn't really my thing. I kind of wished I had added some brighter colors to go with it. But, it is entered and ready to be accepted or rejected into the contest. My quilting makes me hope it is rejected, but that's just me. I'm just glad I had a chance to play with quilting on my home machine which makes this project worth it to me.

The next challenge is with some lovely Michael Miller fabrics. During a long car ride through Seattle traffic yesterday, I came up with what I am going to do with them. I had 3.5 hours to contemplate it so I'm fairly certain this has been well thought out.

I might be able to get started on that tomorrow. Today is errands, fun in Olympia with some awesome people, and more errands. And, a Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there - human or feline moms - we don't discriminate amongst species here. Well, I was gone for too long a time and I have been so neglectful of the blogs that I like to read. I have a lot of reading to catch up on and quilts to plan. My busy season at work is over and has been for about a month. I've been doing lots of quilting at home, just not blogging about it. And, not reading others' blogs which really bums me out. I need to dig through my blog list and get caught up!

The good news here is that the cat army is happy and healthy and have made a friend with the neighbor cat who I've been calling Frank. Frank is not to be disturbed when it comes to hanging out by the windows and watching the army in action. The army is familiar with him and even go nose to nose with him. As long as Frank stays on his side of the glass we will be okay. Frank doesn't really understand that last one. I had the carpeting replaced on the staircase here and had the front door open with people going in and out with loud sounding equipment. I had to escort Frank out of my living room twice during that. My own cats were hiding underneath beds upstairs. Frank is a tricky one.

So, the quilting…

I took a class during the winter on color value. Why take a class during my busy season? Apparently, I like to add to my stress level. Actually, it was a welcome break and I'm so glad I did that. We cut 6 inch blocks of light, medium and dark fabrics to make varying groups of half square triangles, like so:

Am I making this bigger, with more fabrics? Of course I am. I have almost all the extra HSTs sewn together and cut down to 5.5 inches. Then I get to make more blocks and get this little sample up to about a 60 x 60 inch quilt. But, are there other projects I've been working on? Yes, yes there are. I hope to update soon and share.

And, I hope that you hear from me on your blogs soon. Just don't drop your cats off in the yard. The army is not taking new recruits.
People who don't know me and who have read the last two postings must think I just tear through my quilt projects and do nothing but share the final version. I only wish that were true. But, I was very lucky to finish this and send it to its new home where I have been told the cats there approve of it. I think that is the test of all great art - whether a cat would be willing to sit on it.

This "little" quilt is gigantic and heavy and really makes cats happy. My work here is done. I finally have pictures of my latest quilts. This is very exciting. We should all be excited. The first is the Graphic Floral Quilt that has been done for awhile, but I haven't gotten around to taking a picture of it. Thankfully, I displayed it at show and tell at the South Sound Modern Quilt Guild meeting and Honnah (Hi, Honnah!) kindly took pictures and displayed them on our Facebook page. Because the work has been done, I will share those pictures here.

That's me on the left with my eyes closed because I am just that good at having my photo taken.

The second is what I feel to be my now legendary Spinster Quilt. I've talked about it for over a year now and its been quilted and mounted on my wall for a long time now. I just haven't gotten around to taking a picture of it. Tonight I sat on my bed with my iPhone and a trusty cat and took some pictures. The first picture below is a close up of the back taken from the inside of the quilt mounted on the wall. I didn't feel like taking it down and getting a better picture. Lazy? Yes!
Wow, right? I promise to stop talking about this. I swear. But, it is on my wall and I get to look at it first thing when I wake up in the morning and when I spend time on my treadmill watching Doctor Who. I'm very happy with it. And, best of all, there is a minimal amount of cat hair that can get on it hanging on the wall. It's all good. I've been gone from the world of blogging and checking up on my favorite blogs. I'd like to say I was distracted, which it true, but it is mostly because I have been too lazy for blogging and busy doing otherwise. I even thought about discontinuing this, but I have met some lovely people through blogging and I like the idea of having a space to talk about pretty, creative things.

Speaking of pretty things, I finished up the front and the back of Catherine's Dresden Quilt. I ordered thread for the quilting but haven't managed to make an appointment at the long-arm studio or get to Jo-Ann's for the batting. Honestly, I would rather have a root canal than go to Jo-Ann's this close to Christmas. I'll toughen up and head over there sometime this week with a coupon and a devil may care attitude. (Last year at Christmas, I went to Jo-Ann's wearing inappropriately high heels. The floors were wet and I fell down and slid into a display of wrapping paper containers. It was like people bowling and I was left with a 7/10 split. I am slightly afraid there is a video of me floating around the Jo-Ann world. But, I digress….)

I originally laid out the blocks in a 4 x 4 square. It looked busy but it also looked too small and I thought that I would have to make 4 more blocks to make it less square and a little longer. I just couldn't do it. I'm a little over Dresden's for the moment. And, as you can see above, I had a cat on the materials. The situation called for special action. I decided to stagger the rows instead of adding more blocks. I think this worked better because it was getting a little busy and now there is some nice negative space. I used the remaining fabrics to make up the back of the quilt. I'll share a picture when it is all bound.
I've had this Christmas fabric for two years now and have not played with it. Since we are getting close to the holiday, I thought I would give it a try. Of course, this won't be done for quite awhile and I don't know how much fun it will be to play with in March but the point is I tried. I tried to make a quilt for Christmas. (Not very hard.)

I've started the cutting. I got the pattern off Pinterest and it consists of two blocks. One block is a 6.5 x 6.5 square of the patterned fabric, the second is a white block with 2.5 x 2.5 patterned square off-center. It will be a good way to display the pattern and should be relatively simple to put together. I like the idea of doing something complex, then a simple quilt to have a quick finish. And, yes, for me a quick finish is two months.
Finally, I would be remiss without sharing this. My Guild partner made all these items out of the fabric I gave to her. I didn't give her any instructions, just told her to do what she wanted because I was curious what she could come up with. As you can see, she did an amazing job and I am so incredibly happy. The embroidery hoop is a gadget holder. If you've seen my kitchen table, you will agree I could use this. It's up on the wall by my sewing machine and I love it. I also got two mug rugs and a little pincushion ring. It was all so awesome and I was very, very happy.
I have a couple of finishes to share and I will have to take some pictures of them. The Spinster quilt is bound and hung on the wall. I realized that I haven't shared the final picture so I will have to take one. And, I finished the pretty flower quilt I started a few months ago. All is well here and I can't wait to get caught up on my blog reading. Hope everyone is doing well.

Did I miss anything? I returned from my European Odyssey late on Thursday. Two days recovering from a cold and jet lag later, and I have finally decided that it is time to update this blog and turn on the sewing machine. The European Odyssey took AH and I from Prague to Amsterdam in 16 days with stops in Munich, Bamberg, and Brugge. It was fabulous and we blogged it at http://eurobeerodyssey.blogspot.com. Over the two weeks, we were spoiled by good beer, good food, and good transportation options. Oh, and I even managed to stop at a quilt store in Amsterdam.

But, enough about my amazing vacation. I have to get caught up on the South Sound Modern Quilt Guild block of the month project. The September block was an aqua and red dream, the October block is an exercise in cool colors.
I am in a Dresden kind of mood. I finished up more for Catherine's quilt and as you see below, they are coming along swimmingly.

But, I can't stop with Catherine's quilt. I have to do more Dresdens. The South Sound Modern Quilt Guild is holding a get to meet you event by asking members to trade scrap fabric packages and asking the recipient of someone's scraps to make that lucky lady something from them. You get an idea of what they like and you get to play with something that might not be in your wheel house. It is a really nice skill building event. The scraps I got are featured below (sorry, I wasn't clever enough to take pictures of them before slicing into them). The instructions I got from the scrap owner were to do something with a heart. That is a great challenge. After playing with the scraps and toying with various heart designs, I decided that the center of a Dresden plate could easily be a lovely heart and my plan of action took place. All the fabrics are the scraps of the donor except for the heart. My first heart attempt ended badly. Luckily, no one was hurt and I was able to move on. I thought this aqua fabric would make a fun heart. I will also be using it for another SSMQG project that I need to complete this week too. It's a month of aqua for me.

My donor's scraps also had some lovely 1.5 inch wide purple strips which I just had to play with. I decided on a couple of log cabins for the back.

The quilting job was rather simple, but I really like how it turned out on the back. You can see the plate and the heart and I like that you can see that on both sides. And, with that, my first mini quilt is complete and my first Dresden plate is complete. Boom!

Now for some more aqua work.....LittleBookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770762924397907202noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382432193612140815.post-38871980169293114232013-08-24T08:26:00.000-07:002013-08-24T08:26:12.278-07:00Dresdens, Baby

We had a lovely week of summer, but it is cooling off a bit here and that is probably fine for my long neglected garden. I watered earlier this week and should have last night but there is a very large spider who has decided to live above the spigot in the back yard and those hoses aren't going to get turned on until he moves on. I'm hoping for a hard frost.

Neglecting my garden has given me lots of free time to finish up some more Dresdens. I really like how these are turning out and if the process of attaching them to something doesn't lead me to drink (ha!), I will probably do another Dresden quilt in the future. I've got 9 of these bad boys done. Only a few more to go and then the painful attaching period starts.

It isn't that I didn't want to share, it's that is hard to write about something that was fun, intense, and rather spiritual. I was awfully proud of myself to be able to walk the 21 mile loop in three days with a full backpack. (Not as full as AH's pack was - thanks for carrying the tent, stove, and bear canister!) Well, I was proud of myself until we came across people on the trail who were running it in a day. That's right running it. Jerks.

A view of the trail, cutting into the hillside.

It was a physically challenging hike which seemed to be straight up hill for two days with a lovely, quick, and rather slippery downhill on day three. There were lots of signs to watch out for aggressive mountain goats, but we didn't see any (aggressive or otherwise). Something big came through our campsite at night - bear, goat, chupacabra, or bigfoot. I don't know what it was because I was too scared to leave the tent to find out; I like to think years of watching bad horror movies have taught me not to leave the safety of my tent when it is pitch dark out and you are in the woods. We had lightning and rain that first night but managed to get some nice star watching in before the clouds came over.

And the views? Well, as you can see, the views were spectacular. Green, green lakes, clear skies with beautiful mountains, and lots of beautiful wildflowers. We did see a rather large herd of elk, or maybe two herds hanging out together. We were not close to them so my pictures didn't turn out but it was nice to see those large animals in an area where they were not going to be messed with by people. It was reassuring that wild spots remain on this planet and I can't wait to hit the trail again.LittleBookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770762924397907202noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382432193612140815.post-36690493279136880402013-08-18T08:39:00.001-07:002013-08-18T08:39:36.878-07:00SSMQG - Block ChallengeThe South Sound Modern Quilt Guild is off to a running start. It's been so interesting to see what the other quilters have made and it is very inspiring. I'm so glad to be a part of this. One of our members was gifted a large amount of what can only be charitably described as "hideous" cat fabric. We took it upon ourselves to use this fabric as our first challenge block. Take a 10 inch square of cat fabric and make it modern. Don't believe that it is hideous?
It is decidedly not modern fabric. And, half of my block is the back of a cat. Yikes.

For inspiration, I picked up my Modern Blocks book and came up with this:
I liked using the bright pink to brighten it up, but I can't help thinking that it now looks like the cats are in jail. The featured cat sure does not look happy. Oh well, I will be very excited to see what the others have come up with at our next meeting. My friend Catherine is adulting. She has a real job with a real salary and benefits, is smart and funny, and is an amazing crafter. She also just bought a house. Her first house. This calls for a gift of a handmade quilt. After giving Ms. Catherine a choice of two fabric packs that I picked up from Fabricworm, she chose the following:

An excellent choice if I do say so myself. The next question for myself was what to do with this bit of loveliness. I played with the pack and took a couple of the lighter gray shades out and put in a couple Pearl Bracelets from my stash (in that I went to the fabric store, bought them for this project, and put them in a bin before I began cutting). But, I was still confronted with the question of what to make out of this. Sure, I could just cut this all into five inch squares and sew that together but that isn't going to cut it because this is Catherine we are talking about and it is going to be special like her.

I was going back and forth on pattern ideas - some kind of disappearing 9 patch, a block called the Old Maid's Block which would just be funny to do, or something else. And then it hit me. Dresden Plates. Why not take Dresden Plates and make them modern with that lovely fabric? I honestly had never really been that interested in the Dresden Plate pattern; I thought it was too old fashioned and fussy and not really "modern." However, after working my way through the Spinster Quilt I realized that half of the fun of modern quilting is taking an old pattern and making it new. I checked with Catherine to make sure this would be okay and that Dresden Plates didn't bring up a horrible childhood experience. "Sure, that would be fine except Dresden Plates were responsible for the death of the family dog." After getting the all clear, I bought the template and began slicing away at the fabric.

I have three done, about 13 or 17 to go, depending how a 4x4 layout looks. This is also going to be a huge quilt - the blocks will be approximately 17 by 17 inches which is a whole lot of Dresden.
I'm off to work on the back of this and I'm thinking of using some of the dark blue that was left over from the Spinster Quilt. I really should be outside playing on this beautiful day, but I'm staying close to home to keep an eye on Scout, AKA Little Girl Cat, AKA Scooter, AKA Scooter McGooder. As you can see above, she is doing great. Why am I worried? Well, she had surgery on Friday to remove a tumor and an abscessed tooth. The tumor was on her lip and is in the process of being sent to the lab for testing. We are assuming that the tumor is benign until we hear differently and will not be worrying about it until then. Friday was exciting in that I got her home from the vet and she was still loopy from the anesthesia and stumbling around like an adorable little furry drunken sailor. She also managed to fall down the stairs twice, which is why I'm staying close to home today. Meanwhile don't worry about Scooter McFurryPants. She is getting lots of scritches today and free access to whatever sewing project she chooses to sit on. She will be fine. Me, on the other hand........

These pictures are from last weekend's backpacking trip with AH. We did two days and one night on the mountain to Emerald Ridge and parts of the Wonderland trail. It was amazing. The trail we took to connect us to the Wonderland trail was not maintained. This is a bit of an understatement. There had been a landslide and about 50 feet of the trail was washed out. The choices were to go through the very fast and cold river or bushwhack through the landslide. We bushwhacked and it was hard. There were times we had to take off our packs and push them ahead of us because we were ducking under trees and tree roots. It was also very, very steep and it was very important to not slide down into the river. Half an hour later we were back on the trail. This was the "easy" part. We were hooking up to the Wonderland trail where we had 2.8 miles and 3000 feet of elevation gain to challenge us. It was a challenge, but we made it to the top and the simply amazing views of the mountain and the glaciers.

Night was spent at the South Puyallup River campsite near the Puyallup River. It was beautiful and I wish I had gotten out of the tent to look at the stars, but sometimes you are tired and in a sleeping bag and there you will remain.
Do you know that I love rhubarb? If you don't, its like you don't know me at all. Rhubarb is the old lady of fruits and veggies. She is showy, she is tart, and she is incredibly delicious. I can't grow rhubarb here in the jungle, but I have friends you do and they are awesome.

A friend of mine gave me three large (and I do mean large) pieces of rhubarb. So, I turned around and made these yummy rhubarb oatmeal bars. Is there a recipe? Oh yes, there is. The recipe comes from cooks.com and is way too easy. It calls for "nuts" so, apparently, there is some flexibility here. I used walnuts because they were on sale. Sometimes I can be thrifty. I mixed the crust ingredients in the food processor until they started coming together and the cooking time took some extra time. It called for 20 minutes, but it took me 40. That could be my oven, but I've never heard of these type of crumb bars getting brown in 20 minutes. (As if that is all I ever think of.)

This reminds me that I have some of these in the freezer. I should probably look into that. I have a ton of photos from my current quilting project, some fabric that I won in an on-line giveaway to share, and lots of pictures from my backpacking trip on Mt. Rainier. But, first, I have to show you a hike I did with CF in early July. The snow was still on the ground, but the day was beautiful. I've done Eagle Peak before. It is 3.5 miles fairly straight up and then a beautiful view of Mt. Rainier and if you are lucky, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Adams. On the day we went, we saw them all.

Some fine Wisconsin beers

i wasn't quilting last week, I was drinking beer and enjoying some fine sunsets in the midwest. I took AH home to meet the family and everyone loved everyone involved. It was a lovely visit and it made me realize how hard it is to live away from family but also to know that no matter how far away I live they will always be there to tease, support, and share in adventures.

Vacation started in Chicago where we had some amazing dinners with friends and saw my very first Cubs game. That was incredible - old school baseball at an old school park. I would definitely go there again (even though I should be a Brewers fan and not inclined to entering enemy territory like that). Then to Wisconsin to visit my parents and look for wild turkeys (success on both fronts). We also went to the University of Wisconsin, my alma mater, and enjoyed some beer on the terrace while students entertained on open mic night and the crew team practiced on the lake in the background. Very warm, very peaceful, very perfect.

More visits with the family and more drinks and rich food, then back to Chicago before the flight home. I kept my eye open for fabric stores in Chicago, but it was half-hearted. Instead, I enjoyed walking around a new place with sore feet and the satisfaction of ordering gin drinks in prohibition-era bars. I also so very enjoyed my traveling companion and can't wait for our next adventure.

After my last project involving 110 blocks and lots of precision, I decided that I need to do a simple, yet pretty quilt. Something that would show off some of the larger patterns I've picked up, but that would not necessarily require seams to match up. So, I've decided to go with a pattern that I've been kicking around for some time.

It's from Purl Bee and it's called A Wedding Quilt. I think it's appropriate to do a wedding quilt since I just finished the spinster quilt and I might as well keep that theme going. But, since I'm not making it for anyone's wedding, I've decided to call this the Graphic Florals Quilt because of the lovely pattern of graphic flowers that I'm using. Feel free to go to Purl Bee to check out what it is going to look like.

The pattern is fairly easy, just a lot of cutting up front. I finished up all the colors and patterns tonight and will next need to start cutting 96 12.5 by 3.5 white pieces. That's the hard work. I can play on the layout a bit and then start assembling.
The fun thing about this pattern is that it should come together quickly. Then, I get to go to my next project which will be much, much more difficult. Just a little hint - I've decided that it should involve way too many HSTs.
The picture isn't that great for the back of the Spinster Quilt. I had to move the coffee table from the living room to get enough room to lay it out and it is slightly difficult to get a good picture of something that big. The back is a dark blue Kona with eight log cabins, one of each of the color groups from the front. I need to schedule some time on the long arm and pick up some batting and get that puppy finished.

In the mean time, I've decided what to play with for my next project. Graphic Florals from a designer bundle I picked up at Fabricworm. This should be fun. Log cabin city! I'm putting these bad boys into the back of the Spinster quilt. The rest will be a lovely dark blue that I picked up on sale awhile ago (thrifty!).
We've started a Modern Quilt Guild here in Olympia. After much discussion and a need to include all our quilting sisters and brothers who are from the outlying areas, we've decided to call it the South Sound Modern Quilt Guild. Did I say this was exciting? Because it is. It is very exciting. I nominated myself to be secretary because I like to type and I have to justify purchasing word for my MacBook. Heck, I have to justify purchasing the MacBook. At any rate, the above quilt is for our first charity project - a quilt or two to give to the Oklahoma City Modern Quilt Guild for them to distribute to tornado survivors. This is my contribution. We went with blue, green, gray, and white to symbolize the colors of Olympia. Boom, people. Olympia is in the quilting house, y'all.LittleBookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770762924397907202noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382432193612140815.post-21432968660670497802013-05-27T20:26:00.001-07:002013-05-27T20:26:59.081-07:00Tunnel Falls on Memorial Day weekend

I put my hiking boots on this weekend, packed a backpack with a sleeping bag and food, and hit the trail with the very awesome AH. We hiked to Tunnel Falls, a hike on the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon and then camped about a mile past the falls. I've never been an eager backpacker, but I have to admit that it was very fun. The campsite we found was about 7 miles up the trail and right on the river. When I woke up during the night I heard the roaring river, and lots of raindrops. Luckily, the rain waited until the night and then made intermittent appearances during the hike back. I highly recommend this hike, even if you aren't into backpacking. The falls are 6 miles in and feature a tunnel carved into the mountain that can be used to walk behind the falls. The roar of the water is deafening, the rocks are slippery, and it is a long way down. I'm very scared of heights so that part became more intense for me, but it was well worth it. It feels good to admit that I might be able to handle a night in the woods. Maybe even more than one if the opportunity arises. This is crazy! I finally finished piecing my Spinster Quilt. I added the last part of the border today and am happily admiring it and the work that it took to put this together. This was not without risk; I took these pictures while standing on the island in my kitchen and I was slightly afraid that I would fall off it. I think it would be an awkward way to die - landing on my head while taking pictures of a quilt. But, that's probably happened to someone somewhere because it is important to get the right shot.

I succeeded in not using the same patterned fabric in more than one block. Most of these were taken out of my stash, but I also definitely purchased some bright colors with the intention of using them here. I did use one or two solids in more than one block, but that is the nature of solids and I'm not going to worry about it.

The cats were helpful as usual and are probably happy that I no longer will inquire as to the condition of their toes. (Are your feet dirty? You can't be here if your feet are dirty!) And, now, to the back! I'm planning on making 8 log cabins, one from each color group represented on the front. I have about three yards of a deep blue and I plan to incorporate the log cabins into the blue and make a simple, but pretty back.

Taking the day off work to finish this was the greatest decision I've ever made!LittleBookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770762924397907202noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382432193612140815.post-923267874017448772013-04-18T20:23:00.005-07:002013-04-18T20:23:58.469-07:00Okay, now I'm done with the re-dos.

After playing with the layout, I decided that I need to remake another three blocks. After I told a friend of mine I was remaking more, she kind of rolled her eyes and told me that I really needed to stop this now. But, she gets it and I think that I will probably not do something this labor intensive again in a long time so I might as well get it right. Having said that, here are the final three entries into the Spinster Quilt.
