Friday Night Sew-In. Windmills #9 and #10

Thanks to the Friday night sew-in, windmills #9 and #10 are complete.  I absolutely love the blue one - the blue tulips on the white background were just spectacular when I unfolded the fat quarter.  I fussy cut it a bit so you could see more of the tulips.

I'm off to post my photos on the Friday night sew-in Flickr group.  Go there to see what other people were up to last night.

  1. Wow! Those are fantastic! I can just barely do pinwheels. I think I will leave doing these to the experts. ha

  3. What a great block! I like the spin-off from pinwheels to be windmills. Great job :)

  4. I am in love with your windmills, where can I get the pattern for that block?

  5. Thank you all so much for your comments! I can't tell you how much it means to me.

@Peggy: I got the block idea from McCall's Quilting website. The link to their pattern is here: http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patterns/details.html?idx=8017

Of course, I did make some changes to it. They actually use three colors in their pins and I use two. Using the pink and blue pinwheel as an example, I cut two 5 3/8 inch squares in the pink and two 5 3/8 inch squares in the blue. I cut them diagonally to make four triangles of each color. I then cut two 5 3/8 inch squares in the black and cut those to make four triangles. Then I cut four 2 inch by 7 inch pieces in black. (The pattern calls for 2 by 6 7/8 inch pieces, but I don't have the patience for that and figured I could trim that down.) I followed the rest of the pattern as McCalls lays it out. I didn't make a template, however. When I attached the 2 by 7 inch piece to a pink triangle, I just sewed it on and then cut off the black "tail" to even up the new triangle. If this doesn't make sense, please sent me an email and I can take pictures of the steps.

There is also a slightly smaller block here http://www.quilterscache.com/P/Pinwheel8Block.html that shows a different way of putting it together.

Thank you so much for asking about this! I'm so happy to share.
